We are committed to a policy of inclusion and equal opportunity and strive to follow best practices as outlined in the statutory guidelines on special education needs and disabilities, in particular, the SEN and Disability Code of Practice: 0 to 25 years 2015 (SEND Code 2015) and the Children and Families Act 2014. Gatehouse is not a special needs school but is committed to its ethos of inclusion, having children with a full range of abilities, including very able children who we support in Nurture Group sessions. We look at children individually to ensure we can meet their needs and provide the best setting for their learning journey.
At Gatehouse, our SEND Team plays a pivotal role in supporting our children and the staff around them. Comprising of dedicated and well-trained professionals, they provide comprehensive support to our students with SEND, ensuring that every child’s needs are met.
Our SEND Team, led by our SENCo, helps support our children with a variety of SEND in a various ways. We have 2 Specialist Teachers who are Level 5 trained in Specific Learning Difficulties. They provide specialist lessons and group support to children with learning needs such as dyslexia, dyspraxia and dyscalculia. Our SEND Teaching Assistants support individuals and groups of children with additional needs in all areas of the curriculum and school life. We implement various school actions such as reading recovery, spelling interventions, touch typing sessions, sensory circuits, and maths intervention groups. Our dedicated nurture teacher offers small group support to our very able children and helps the teaching staff meet the needs of these children during their lessons. We also have 2 Speech and Language Therapists and an Occupational Therapist who provide specialist assessments of children, therapy sessions where appropriate, and in-house training to all the staff. We also conduct screenings for dyslexia and dyscalculia to identify specific needs early on and implement the necessary actions.
